How to Use a TDP Lamp in Clinical Practice
Share
The TDP (Teding Diancibo Pu) mineral heat lamp is one of the most practical tools in a TCM or acupuncture clinic. It delivers focused far-infrared heat to acupuncture points and affected areas, promoting circulation, relieving pain, and supporting the body's healing response, without any smoke or combustion.
This guide covers everything you need to know to use a TDP lamp safely and effectively in clinical practice.
What Is a TDP Lamp?
TDP lamps use a mineral plate coated with a proprietary formula of 33 essential elements. When heated, the plate emits far-infrared electromagnetic waves in a frequency range that closely matches the body's own bio-infrared emissions. This is thought to enhance cellular metabolism, improve microcirculation, and support tissue repair.
They are widely used in TCM clinics as a warming adjunct to acupuncture, a substitute for moxibustion in smoke-sensitive environments, and as a standalone treatment for musculoskeletal conditions.
Choosing the Right Model
AcuShop stocks two clinical TDP lamp models suited to different needs:
- TDP Lamp CQ-27 - the classic clinical workhorse. Compact, manoeuvrable head on a flexible arm, ideal for targeted point work and smaller treatment areas. Well-suited to most general practice settings.
- TDP Lamp CQ-29 - larger emitter plate for broader coverage. Better suited to treating larger muscle groups, the lumbar region, or full abdominal moxibustion protocols.
Replacement elements are available for both models: CQ-27 replacement element and CQ-29 replacement element. Keep a spare on hand. The elements typically last 1,000–1,500 hours of clinical use.

How to Set Up the Lamp
- Warm up first. Switch the lamp on 5-10 minutes before use. The mineral plate needs time to reach operating temperature and emit effective far-infrared radiation.
- Position the lamp. Angle the emitter head directly at the treatment area. The head should face the skin perpendicularly for maximum infrared penetration.
- Set the correct distance. Start at 30-40 cm from the skin surface and adjust based on patient feedback. The sensation should be comfortably warm (never hot or burning).
- Secure the arm. Tighten the arm joints so the lamp holds its position throughout the treatment without drifting.
Treatment Distance and Duration
| Treatment Area | Recommended Distance | Session Duration |
|---|---|---|
| Back / lumbar | 30 - 40 cm | 20 - 30 min |
| Shoulder / neck | 25 - 35 cm | 15 - 25 min |
| Abdomen / CV points | 35 - 45 cm | 20 - 30 min |
| Knee / joint | 25 - 35 cm | 15 - 20 min |
| Hands / feet | 20 - 30 cm | 10 - 15 min |
These are starting guidelines. Always adjust based on individual patient sensitivity, age, and condition. Elderly patients and those with reduced skin sensitivity require closer monitoring.
Clinical Applications
TDP lamps are effective across a wide range of TCM and acupuncture presentations:
- Cold-Bi syndrome - joint pain aggravated by cold; TDP heat directly counters the pathogenic factor
- Yang deficiency patterns - warming CV4, CV6, ST36 or GV4 as a moxibustion substitute
- Muscle tension and spasm - particularly effective on the upper trapezius, lumbar erectors, and IT band
- Post-needling recovery - applied after needle removal to extend the therapeutic effect and reduce residual soreness
- Digestive disorders - warming the abdomen over CV12, ST25, and adjacent points for cold-type digestive patterns
- Gynaecological conditions - warming the lower abdomen for cold-type dysmenorrhoea or uterine cold
Safety Guidelines
- Never leave a patient unattended under the lamp, especially the elderly or those with reduced sensation.
- Do not use over open wounds, areas of active inflammation, or skin with reduced sensitivity (e.g., diabetic neuropathy) without extra caution.
- Avoid use over the eyes or face at close range.
- Ensure the lamp arm is fully secured before stepping away from the treatment table.
- Allow the lamp to cool before moving or storing it.
- Check the element periodically - a cracked or discoloured plate should be replaced promptly.
TDP vs Moxibustion: When to Choose Each
| TDP Lamp | Moxibustion | |
|---|---|---|
| Smoke-free | ✓ Yes | ✗ (unless smokeless) |
| Hands-free during treatment | ✓ Yes | ✗ Requires attention |
| Classical TCM approach | Moderate | High |
| Broad area coverage | ✓ Yes (CQ-29) | Limited |
| Point-specific application | Moderate | ✓ Precise |
| Ongoing running cost | Low (element replacement) | Moxa consumables |
Maintenance Tips
- Wipe the mineral plate gently with a dry cloth - never use water or cleaning agents on the element.
- Store with the head angled downward or in a protective cover to prevent dust accumulation on the plate.
- Track hours of use and plan element replacement proactively rather than waiting for failure mid-session.
